Bjorn Phau
The last American man to win a major tennis title was Andy Roddick, 24 Grand Slams ago. It's the second-longest drought in U.S. tennis annals, and the 27-year-old Roddick began to try to do something about it Monday night, when he stepped on a Slam court for the first time since his Wimbledon heartbreak, and looked no worse for the emotional wear.
On a brisk opening night in Flushing Meadows, Roddick pounded his way past Bjorn Phau, his diminutive and game German opponent, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. read more
